Early on, Zaheer Khan bowled fantastic along with Praveen Kumar to put out Sri Lanka for 142. Sri Lanka shockingly were at different stages, 11/4, 33/5, 44/6. It was a 74 run partnership between Thushara and Kulasekara and some last wicket fun from Fernando and Muralitharan that got them their eventual total which was at least competitive in the given conditions and wicket. You expect this to happen in cricket. But there was another side to this. When Dhoni first emerged as Indian captain during the T20 World Cup, he caught everyone's eye with his proactive captaincy and smart bowling changes. Today and of late, Dhoni has turned reactive rather than proactive often going on the defensive (for eg no slips with Sri Lanka tottering 6 down and bringing in a slip 9 down after two edges have gone through the region). But he made up for it when India batted, seeing it through almost to the end after the Lankans had India a bit shaky at 75/5. With Gambhir out of the match and Sehwag ruled out for the series India opened with Kohli and Pathan. Virat Kohli stuck around looking super at times and then got out just when he was looking on-his-way (as he showed us umpteen times during the IPL). Subramaniam Badrinath finally, finally got a game. The delay is surprising considering Dhoni was his captain during the IPL. Badri started off with a super catch and later some sensible batting in the company of Dhoni to see India through. What was most striking was his relative comfort facing Murali-Mendis. Today was a solid performance but he has shown his attacking streak during the IPL playing for the Chennai SuperKings. So interesting times ahead, it seems.
