Sri Lankan Chase
Watch free online cricket highlights from the 3rd One Day match - Sri Lanka vs India 2008 Idea Cup Series. India won this match defending a moderate score of 237 - MS Dhoni, Mahela Jayawardene, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, and Indian bowlers Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar and Munaf Patel were standout today.
With the series hanging at 1-1, the winner of this game would have the advantage of not having to play catch up. Well, I suppose any match in any series has that kind of advantage attached to it. India won the crucial toss and sent their openers out first. For the 40 run partnership Kohli and Gambhir notched up, it was mainly Kohli stroking around before once again getting out in the 20s. There's just too many better batsmen breathing down his neck for him to not make the best of what he gets - Sehwag and Tendulkar will be back soon and Uthappa is hanging around. Dhoni in the company of Suresh Raina and later Rohit Sharma got India into a launch position that never really took off. In hindsight, it was a good score, but that's only because no Sri Lankan top batsman stuck around with Mahela. Sharma was aesthetically pleasing as always during his 32 run stay while Dhoni played the anchor role he seems to prefer nowadays. There's no doubt that Dhoni was the central reason India got their total but I can't remember any semblance of THE Dhoni turning up in the last 1 and a half odd years. Nowadays, he can gather fifties but doesn't ever really look like he's gonna take off the way he used to. But in the context of the game, it was a Man of the Match deserving knock, which he won.
Praveen Kumar (what a fantastic potential super all-rounder this guy can be) and Zaheer put Sri Lanka pretty much out of the game at 59/6 and set it up for what could have been a truly great one day innings of all time, which just fell short - Mahela Jayawardene's 94. The manner in which he paced it and his calculated attack towards the death was reminiscent of the 2007 World CUp semifinal except this time he was chasing with the tail on offer. A super knock all in all that sent jitters among some of the Indian fielders causing several moments of them having a go at each other over fielding blemishes.
