Watch India vs Australia: cricket highlights from the fifth and final day of the first test played at Bangalore on October 13, 2008.
Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman ensured a draw after Ricky Ponting tossed up a target of 299 – possibly the most aggressive move by the Aussies in this test.
Sehwag was out soon despite getting a life from Haddin (and Hayden in a way, who was busy celebrating) while Dravid followed quickly. With India 2 down, the Australian close-in fielders came alive with plenty to laugh and chat and about – Oh that’s a blistering cover drive and the like.
A brilliant knock by Tendulkar in the company of Gambhir and Laxman basically saved the game from there – brilliant in its assuredness and calmness guiding India through two sessions and a bit after tea. The only spoilsport to the knock was its end which came on 49 – with the light fading, Tendulkar seemed preoccupied with this aspect. In fact, the Aussies sensed this – keep an ear out for the ball before Tendulkar gets out – you can hear Haddin saying “It just got darker in here”. Poor light brought the teams in and out for two spells of play to force out a result, but Laxman and Ganguly saw them out quite comfortably.
Lee and Gambhir had quite a few tussles early on, while Laxman walked out to a 4 to 5 men-on-the-onside field. In response he pulled out a couple of super offdrives and guides through third man. Though Tendulkar was fantastic to watch today it was also a bit disappointing cos he might as well have broken Lara’s record, rather than obsess over leaving the field for poor light. It does have its positives though – it raps the knuckles of the theory that Sachin Tendulkar is only concerned about batting records.
Prematch-Though drifting towards Australia after Shane Watson and Haddin quickly added runs on the 4th day, it's still anyone's game to win with a draw too very likely.
