Watch free cricket highlights from the 3rd day's play of the 4th Test at Nagpur - Australia vs India - during the order-Gavaskar Trophy Series.

Scoreline: Australia 355 all out. Simon Katich 102. Mike Hussey 90. Harbhajan Singh 3 wickets.

The morning session was reason for some controversy with several calling into question Dhoni’s negative tactics – Ishanth Sharma and Zaheer Khan had an extended spell with Harbhajan being introduced 15 minutes before lunch and the two pacers consistently bowled on and outside offstump to an 8 man offside field. When Anil Kumble had retired this blog had speculated about potential success – when success is still in its potential stage you have many clamouring around it and blowing it out of proportion. Dhoni is a very good effective captain but he’s not the great attacking captain people have been orgiastically claiming he is. For all the criticism of Dhoni’s tactics today, an Indian viewer can turn around and question the tactics of Australia throughout this series while bowling. Mitchell Johnson was mostly on offstump and beyond and fields were set to deliberately cut off the run-scoring areas of each batsman. The Indian middle order and Gambhir (Sehwag is not included cos he defies all conjecture) found ways to score – in this test itself, Tendulkar and Laxman took runs off Krejza, while splitting the gaps to the pacers with the quality of their batting.

No one other than Cameron White mildly towards the end and Haddin for a while today seemed inclined to even try something. Just think – Hussey and Katich scored 43 runs in the morning session off 24 overs, which may be relatively ok cos the spinners hardly bowled during that session. But post lunch and tea, defensive Clarkes and Watsons just don’t look right. So if the Aussies were bowled out for 355 they need to cop some of the blame for the situation. It was hilarious to listen to the very people baying for Kumble’s blood turning the heat on Dhoni today. It’s not like this blog has been particularly fond of Dhoni over the last year or so, but these things make you wonder why watching a game with the mute button or loud background music is a good idea.

Katich was dropped first by Dravid and then Laxman (though it possibly dropped short, he’s taken those) and after scoring 92 off 120 balls yesterday he ended up 102 off 189 today. Hussey was out to brilliant work by Murali Vijay and Dhoni for 90 off 229 balls. Cameron White scored 46 off 133 - the T20 stalwart doing this.

India were very conservative today on the whole, but if Australia want to retain the Border-Gavaskar Series they should be the ones trying to win this game. Who knows – maybe Brett Lee will have one last hurrah tomorrow. All in all an intriguing day’s play tomorrow, cos the Australians just can’t afford to return defensiveness in kind tomorrow.
